Next round of SHAPE course applications available March 16, 2020.
SHAPE course proposals will be selected based on criteria detailed in the call for proposals:
- In order to address subject matter from a multi-disciplinary perspective, the co-teaching teams should pair an arts or humanities faculty member with one from the sciences or engineering.
- Applicants must hold instructional appointment (tenured faculty, tenure track, or lecturers) when developing and teaching the course, and approval of their chair.
- Courses will be fully co-taught, with both faculty members involved in every element of the course, in the classroom and out, from beginning to end;
- Preference will be given to courses which address subjects of major social significance in the region, nation, or world.
- Courses will be designed to incorporate artist's work as a meaningful part of the curriculum and the attainment of educational objectives.
- Faculty will commit to help design contextualizing activities (e.g., pre-performance lectures; topical symposia) to accompany the artists’ public performances associated with their course residency.
- Courses will contribute to the University’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, based on teaching, service, research and/or perspective.
- Courses will fit into either First-Year Seminars or University Honors Program design.
- During this cycle we anticipate awarding more FYS than UHP course proposals although both styles are most welcome.
- Agreeing to teach a SHAPE course also means faculty are agreeing to participate in assessment activities both during the quarter that the course is offered as well as in programmatic assessments in anticipation of our final report and potential renewal.
Please note: Proposals from faculty in the humanistic social sciences are most welcome. Since we are looking for truly cross-disciplinary teams, instructors for all applications (whether leaning more towards the arts and humanities or the sciences and engineering in terms of perspectives and approaches) should come from different Colleges or at minimum, different academic departments.
